3 X 3 Eyes Collector’s Edition

Length: 270 Min
Distributor: Pioneer

You’ve all 3X3 Eyes in the stores and wondered, whether it was cool, or just another tentacle anime. Surprise, surprise, there aren’t any tentacles,… at least not any tentacles going in the wrong places.

Pai is the legendary holy demon with three eyes. These holy demons have a bunch of power, and that probably goes without saying. You can’t have demons without some power lurking around. In any case, she wants to become human, and in the first part of this collection, Pai and her companion Yokumo search for the lost treasure which, wouldn’t you know it, happens to be needed to unlock an equally if not more powerful dark demon.

One of the unique parts of 3X3 Eyes is that Yokumo becomes Pai’s, Wu, an immortal protector (she basically steals his soul to protect him from his clumbsiness). At the beginning of this DVD he gets seemingly killed in the most violent ways possible only to prove this point. It’s worth noting, that you will probably feel bad after laughing your #$$ off when you see him get run over by a bus, or sliced in half.

The second part of 3X3 Eyes has Pai reuniting with Yakumo to finally take on this demon once and for all. Pai learns of her past and some of the best writing you’ll ever SEE. There’s quite a few surprises, not to mention now that you know the characters from the first few episodes, these last few seem to have more impact.

There’s so much to say about this short series. The dark demons are well designed, and are disgustingly violent without any nudity. In the second part of 3X3 Eyes, the fight scenes will satisfy any action fan’s desire, while the romantic twist of the entire show will captivate all.

The animation in 3X3 Eyes is a classic style similar to but not as grand as Akira. It’s not revolutionary, but it will certainly entertain. However, in the second half, the animation rate jumps up to Akira-like levels, and the fight scenes are almost worth the price of admission alone.

If the cast and the soundtrack doesn’t blow you away, you usually won’t notice what a great job has been done. This is the case in 3X3 Eyes. The music isn’t overly compelling and the actors do a good enough job that you won’t head to a forum and complain abou the dubbing.

270 Minutes of excellent animation and a great story for around $48. We’ve seen 3X3 Eyes as low as 38 at some local stores. Half.com may even have it for cheaper. In any case, there isn’t anything missing with this DVD. Every anime fan should have this in their collection.  Pioneer did a great job packages 3X3 Eyes together. The first story was easily obtainable, and many of you probably saw it. It was an average story of ‘Gotta stop the evil demon.” However, when you’re allowed to see the second half of the story, it becomes much more romantic.. on different levels even. However, without one side, you’ll lose the impact of the other,…. just like life…. errr sort of.
